Cisco’s inaugural State of Industrial Networking Report highlights the primary investment areas for industrial organizations, focusing on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI). Based on a survey of 1,000 individuals from various sectors, the report uncovers the critical importance of these technologies in addressing internal and external growth barriers.

Cybersecurity: A Critical Concern

The report reveals that 89% of respondents view cybersecurity compliance as highly important, underscoring the pervasive concern over cybersecurity risks. These risks are identified as the primary internal barrier to growth and a significant external obstacle. Challenges in maintaining industrial infrastructure are predominantly linked to cybersecurity, with 39% of respondents citing vulnerabilities in legacy systems, malware attacks on industrial control systems (ICS), and insider threats as significant issues.

Despite recognizing the need for collaboration between IT and operational technology (OT) teams on cybersecurity, 41% of respondents admit that these teams operate independently. This disjointed approach highlights a significant area for improvement. Many believe that AI could bridge this gap, with 46% of respondents suggesting that AI deployment will foster increased collaboration between IT and OT, thereby enhancing network management and cybersecurity.

AI: Emerging Investment and Collaboration Catalyst

AI is a top spending priority; companies view it as a transformative technology for industrial organizations. The report indicates that 31% of respondents have prioritized investment in AI-enabled devices, making it the highest area of focus, followed closely by cybersecurity solutions at 30%. This investment trend reflects the growing confidence in AI’s potential to revolutionize industrial operations.

Nearly half of the respondents expect AI to enhance reliability and meet stringent cybersecurity requirements. Additionally, AI is anticipated to facilitate better network management across IT and OT domains, addressing one of the key challenges faced by industrial organizations. The deployment of AI is viewed as a means to improve collaboration, efficiency, and security, positioning it as a cornerstone of future industrial technology strategies.

Cisco’s report underscores the pivotal role of AI and cybersecurity in the industrial sector. As organizations navigate the complexities of modern industrial operations, integrating these technologies is crucial for mitigating risks, enhancing collaboration, and driving growth. The findings suggest a clear trajectory for future investments, with AI and cybersecurity leading the charge in shaping the industrial landscape.
