Microsoft, Qlik and Tableau earn top marks

Gartner has released its 2016 Magic Quadrant report analyzing the state of business intelligence (BI) in 2016, where it’s headed, and who the top players are. According to the report, vendors were assessed for their support of five main use cases:

  • Agile centralized BI provisioning
  • Decentralized analytics
  • Governed data discovery
  • Embedded BI
  • Extranet deployment

Gartner further assessed BI tools on 14 additional criteria the researchers consider critical, including infrastructure, data management, content creation and analysis, and sharing of findings. The survey was conducted in 2015 and resulted in Qlik, Microsoft, and Tableau being positioned in the leader’s quadrant.

Qlik received high marks for the ease of use, complexity of analysis and business uses of its QlikView and Qlik Sense products. Gartner noted that compared to its closest competitors, Microsoft and Tableau, it scored significantly higher on complexity of analysis. It also scored in the top quartile for user enablement due to its training, tutorials and other resources, including the new Qlik Continuous Classroom. Qlik also scored high in product success and was noted for having a strong partner network.

Next up is Microsoft. The company’s strengths include their cloud-based model and low per-user pricing, and they ranked in the top quartiles for achievement of business benefits and user enablement. It was also noted for its improved partner network and the continued expansion of the number and types of data it supports.

Rounding out the top three is Tableau. It was positioned in the leader quadrant largely due to its ease of use, efforts to expand product awareness, and maintaining a healthy growth rate. Its strengths include its sales model, number of deployments, and versatility. The company scored the top overall rating for user enablement thanks to a variety of user resources and its continuously growing annual user conference. Its core product strength is the diversity of data source connectivity, Gartner stated.

Birst, Alteryx, SAS and SAP were among those in close striking distance to the leader quadrant.
